Why being good at your job is keeping you stuck

Being good at what you do keeps you indispensable at a level you’ve outgrown.

Excellent work makes you useful. And being useful is seductive.

Usefulness brings you more day-to-day and “urgent” work.

All that output hides how well you think.

People continue to see the brilliant expert or dependable fixer.

So they keep giving you more of the work that’s keeping you stuck where you are.

And at the same time, they tell you that you need to be more strategic.

You may have hit a ceiling. You know something needs to change, but the work itself leaves you with no space to work out what.

So the cycle continues.

And after a while, you stop expecting anything different.
